Oddworld Abe's Exidous Characters
So I still remember seeing the first game, Abe’s Oddysee, on the shelf at our local retailer and thinking that the game-play art on the back looked pretty great. It was after Christmas so I must have gotten it on some crazy deal, but I think I played through the game 6 or so times. It was amazing! It was all so above what was available at the time. And best of all, it told a great story. Funny, compelling, and a little off. For a 14 year old kid, it doesn’t get much better.

The world was immersive. The Art, the Characters, the Audio, the Level Design, the Game Play… everything was made to wrap around you. It was expansive as well. With all of those extra Mudokins to save you ended up in entire level designs that were completely hidden from normal gameplay.

There was an extension game (Abe’s Exoddous) and a few other titles (Munch’s Oddysee and Stranger) that were good, but the later games never really recaptured the fresh feel and depth of the Abe titles. Turns out they have revamped and re-released the original Abe’s Oddysee as New and Tasty. I’ll have to try that one out to see how it stacks up.
